Ebook About
New York Times bestselling author Anne Sebba's moving biography of Ethel Rosenberg, the wife and mother whose execution for espionage-related crimes defined the Cold War and horrified the world. In June 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a couple with two young sons, were led separately from their prison cells on Death Row and electrocuted moments apart. Both had been convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for the Soviet Union, despite the fact that the US government was aware that the evidence against Ethel was shaky at best and based on the perjury of her own brother. This book is the first to focus on one half of that couple for more than thirty years, and much new evidence has surfaced since then. Ethel was a bright girl who might have fulfilled her personal dream of becoming an opera singer, but instead found herself struggling with the social mores of the 1950’s. She longed to be a good wife and perfect mother, while battling the political paranoia of the McCarthy era, anti-Semitism, misogyny, and a mother who never valued her. Because of her profound love for and loyalty to her husband, she refused to incriminate him, despite government pressure on her to do so. Instead, she courageously faced the death penalty for a crime she hadn’t committed, orphaning her children.Seventy years after her trial, this is the first time Ethel’s story has been told with the full use of the dramatic and tragic prison letters she exchanged with her husband, her lawyer and her psychotherapist over a three-year period, two of them in solitary confinement. Hers is the resonant story of what happens when a government motivated by fear tramples on the rights of its citizens.

Book Ethel Rosenberg: An American Tragedy Review :

It's obvious that author Anne Sebba put a great amount of effort into writing this book. My interest level wavered at times as it became confusing as to who actually did what and the mixed attitudes of family members towards one another. What information was actually passed on to the Russians appears to remain a mystery other than a drawing of a device that could supposedly assist the Russians into building an atomic weapon. Since Russia was an American ally during World War II the Rosenbergs appear to have thought that sharing secrets of the bomb used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, was appropriate. Her brother David and his wife Ruth accused Ethel of typing a letter regarding the building of this nuclear device. One has to wonder how David, having flunked several college courses on related matters, would be able to draw up a credible design even though he had been working at Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the Manhattan Project was taking place. Both Julius and Ethel grew up in poor families on the Lower East Side in New York City and it doesn't appear they received any significant help, if any, from the Russians for their efforts. Both Julius and Ethel were devoted to one another and their two male children, Michael and Robby, who grew up to be upstanding citizens who did much to further their education. Their future success after the execution of their parents is attributed to the Meeropols, their wonderful adoptive parents, the children's innate intelligence, and the early mothering they received from Ethel. The fact that both Julius and Ethel were executed for their assistance to the Russians came at a time during the Joe McCarthy red scares during the early 1950s when people were unjustly accused of being a Communist probably contributed to the hysteria that was taking place in America. I can't help but wonder what the penalty would be if those responsible for our January 6, 2021, insurrection had taken place during the time of the Rosenbergs. The book contains two sets of eight pages of photographs in each section.
Anne Sebba wrote an excellent accounting of the Rosenberg's particularly Ethel, in this extremely well researched and fascinating account . I've read many other books about the Rosenberg's , but Sebba's new book is excellent and should be read by anyone interested in this tragic subject dealing not only with the Rosenberg's but also the McCarthy Era, spying, and the crazed communist fears in post war war America.
